Everything You Need to Know about Liquid Screed
Times are changing, there have been so many developments to improve the quality of materials we use today, and one of those is liquid screed. This innovative material will forever change the way you think about concrete.
Ready Mix vs Liquid Screed
With traditional ready-mix concrete, each customer has individual measurements of sand, cement, water and aggregates mixed with the additives needed for the job at hand, the additives can tweak the curing time or give extra strength to the product. As you can imagine, with so many variables this needs to be prepared at a plant to suit each clients needs, which can take time and rack up the costs to the consumer. Ready-mix concrete is well suited to building structures due to the aggregates used, strength is its strong point.
Liquid screed uses smaller aggregates in fewer quantities, which makes for an easier flow and much smoother finish. Its liquid- like properties give it the upper hand when it comes to coverage of an area. Screed costs less to produce, is more environmentally friendly and still withstands the test of time on wear. Liquid screed can successfully be applied to both floors and walls evenly.
Drying Time
Liquid screed has a faster drying time, you will be able to walk over it in just 24-48 hours, compared with traditional screed which can take a lot longer. As you can imagine, this gives it the edge when it comes to flooring.
Installation Time
With liquid screed surface laitance is not an issue, so it removes the need for the arduous task of sanding down the surface, making for quicker and easier installation time. As touched upon in the earlier comparison, liquid screed has good flowability, which means it can cover a larger area in a shorter time period. It is also self levelling, requiring only light manipulating to achieve a smooth finish. Because liquid screed is easier to apply, there are also fewer health and safety risks associated with installation. It is worth bearing in mind that screed has minimal drying shrinkage and is less likely to crack.
Underfloor Heating
One of the joys of liquid screed is the thinner depths compared to ready-mixed materials, meaning that it is brilliant for thermal conducting. Underfloor heating can be installed with higher effect, reducing your energy costs for keeping warm in the colder months. With rising energy prices, these savings will make all the difference.

Thickness
Depending on the type of liquid screed used, the minimum thickness needed is different. Standard screed for example has a minimum of 30mm, whereas the specialist variant needs only 15mm thickness. It has been found that despite its thin depth, liquid screed surpasses the thicker depths of regular sand and cement in strength. It is also more suited to the insulation of a project building because a bulkier layer of floor insulation can be applied, further reducing energy costs.
Versatility
Liquid screed is a material that can be used with both smaller domestic areas and larger commercial projects. Whatever your area size, or the future plans for the space, this is the material that will set you off on the right foot.
Flooring Adhesives
Another bonus of is its compatibility for all types of adhesives, making the next step of your project much simpler. No matter the flooring type you have in mind, the applying of the required adhesives will be a breeze.
